BAC’s Employment Services (ES) client Keith P. loves movies. Going to the movies to watch a great adventure film or comic book caper has been Keith’s favorite pastime since childhood. That’s why when ES Employment Coordinator, Angie Hernandez discovered that working in the theatre was Keith’s “dream job” she thought of one employer in particular.
Cue Bill Garza.
A manager at Cobb Theatres Merritt Island, Garza has worked with BAC for many years and provided work opportunities to clients when possible. Knowing that Cobb Theatres and Keith would have great chemistry together, Hernandez scheduled an interview with Garza. It didn’t take long for Garza to realize that Keith’s passion for the movies and strong desire to work would make him an excellent On-the-Job Training (OJT) employee. When Garza offered Keith an OJT opportunity to work as an usher, it was a starring role as far as he was concerned.
Like many people with disabilities eager to work, however, transportation was going to be a challenge. Knowing how much this opportunity meant to Keith from both a work and social standpoint, his cast of supporters came together to solve that problem. Thanks to Hernandez; Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, Tory Lovelace; Waiver Support Coordinator, Tom Buddington; and Keith’s group home manager, Uber rides to and from the theatre were scheduled to ensure Keith was not only able to get to work, but that he also was never late.
In spite of his disability, Keith’s enthusiasm to work and positive attitude gave him the happy ending he desired. And thanks to Garza, Keith and those who have had an OJT opportunity at Cobb Theatres Merritt Island now have experience they can showcase at their next audition.
