Celebrating Creativity and Inclusion: Highlights from the 41st BAC Color in Motion Arts Festival

This February the grounds of the Brevard Zoo were filled with color, music, laughter, and creativity as students and educators from across Brevard County gathered for the 41st annual BAC Color in Motion Arts Festival. What began more than four decades ago as a celebration of artistic expression for students with disabilities has grown into a beloved community tradition that continues to inspire thousands each year.

This year’s festival welcomed 997 students and 604 teachers, staff, and chaperones from 60 schools across Brevard County. Together, they experienced two unforgettable days of art, music, exploration, and connection, bringing our total student reach to 1,799 when including classrooms that participated in our virtual art instruction leading up to the event.

Watch the highlights from this year’s festival in the recap video below.

A Two-Day Interactive Event, Where Art Comes to Life

From the moment students arrived, creativity was everywhere. Throughout the zoo, BAC setup interactive art stops designed for ESE students to not only experience the arts but to encourage exploration, self-expression, and collaboration.

This year’s Art Stops included:

      • Collaborative Popsicle Stick Art with BAC Resident Artist Mary Moon and Lotane & Associates
      • Paper Owl Craft hosted by GFWC-Viera (General Federation of Women’s Clubs)
      • Scratchboard Star Art with Brevard Public Schools Student Services and FDLRS-East
      • Musical Petting Zoo with Kricket Moros, where students could explore stringed instruments
      • American Sign Language and sensory activities with John Favuzza M.S., ASL Instructor and students from Eastern Florida State College (EFSC)
      • Clay constellation art with the Brevard Zoo
      • Interactive drumming led by Dallas Clark
      • Face painting by BAC and EFSC students

Students also had the chance to meet Stormtroopers from the 501st Legion, whose volunteer costuming group brings joy to communities through appearances at charitable events.

Each activity was designed not just to entertain, but to build confidence, strengthen communication, and encourage creative expression, demonstrating how powerful the arts can be as a learning tool.

A Canvas of Creativity from Classrooms Across Brevard

In the weeks leading up to the festival, classrooms participated in virtual art instruction led by BAC’s Resident Artist, guiding students in creating unique classroom banners inspired by this year’s theme.

More than 500 students participated in the virtual program, and the finished banners were proudly displayed throughout the festival grounds—each one a colorful reflection of the imagination and teamwork happening in Brevard County classrooms.

Honoring a Legacy of Creativity

This year’s festival also carried special meaning as we celebrated Lee Sorensen, BAC’s Arts Program Manager, who is retiring after 10 years with BAC and more than 40 years of service supporting individuals with disabilities.

Before joining BAC, Lee worked as an Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher and witnessed firsthand how creative expression could transform the lives of students with behavioral and learning challenges. That experience shaped her lifelong commitment to integrating the arts into education.

Through her leadership, BAC’s arts programming has expanded opportunities for young artists to explore painting, music, dance, and other creative outlets—helping countless students build confidence and discover their voices.

Her impact will continue to be felt in every future festival and every artist inspired through BAC’s programs.

Powered by an Incredible Community

An event of this size is only possible because of the people who believe in its mission.

This year, 178 volunteers contributed more than 700 hours helping plan, prepare, and bring the festival to life—from packing student backpacks to guiding activities and welcoming guests.

We also extend a heartfelt thank you to the participants from BAC’s Adult Day Training program, who volunteered alongside the BAC Arts Committee to help prepare festival materials. Their behind-the-scenes support reflects the spirit of inclusion and collaboration that defines this event.

To our teachers and school partners, thank you for preparing your students and making the journey to the festival. Your dedication ensures that creativity remains a meaningful part of the learning experience for students across Brevard County.

Looking Ahead

For 41 years, the BAC Color in Motion Arts Festival has celebrated creativity, inclusion, and the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to express themselves through the arts.

Seeing hundreds of students painting, drumming, signing, sculpting, and laughing together reminds us why this event matters. It’s more than a festival, it’s a space where creativity opens doors, confidence grows, and every voice can be heard.

To our students, teachers, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners: thank you for making this year’s festival unforgettable.
