National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is being celebrated during the month of October throughout the nation. In honor of this focus on the employment of individuals with disabilities, we would like to introduce you to a few of our clients this month. This week’s client is Frances T.
As a Rockledge teenager in the disco-era ‘70s, Frances T. was eager to see the world and be all that she could be. Determined to jumpstart her life, she joined the military after high school and soon was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama where she began training to become an Air Traffic Controller, a career she knew she’d pursue after her military service ended. That all changed, however, after the decision to not wear a seat belt almost cost Frances her life.
After surviving the auto accident, Frances was told that she would need to undergo extensive rehabilitation, but would probably never walk again. Frances let the doctor know in her own colorful language that she would not only walk again, but “keep on walking” and regain her independence. After a lot of hard work and determination, Frances did just that. With her motor skills improved, it was now time to focus on how she could keep her mind active too. Enter Brevard Achievement Center (BAC).
BAC’s Rockledge-based Habilitation program gives individuals with disabilities the chance to learn social and vocational independence through classroom education and on-site work opportunities. Social skills, computer skills, cooking and budgeting are just a few of the classes clients participate in during the week. They also earn a paycheck each day by performing such jobs as mail sorting, packaging, small kit assembly and light custodial duties, among other things. The Habilitation program was the perfect fit for Frances. Her brother, Bill put it best.
“What keeps her from deteriorating are the social activities and work assignments,” he said. “BAC gives Frances a purpose. Otherwise, she would just be sitting at home watching t.v.”
On any given day, you can find Frances working on her computer skills in Computer class, making art in Cogswell Street Studio or performing her favorite task, stuffing envelopes for various mailing projects in BAC’s Production Center.
“I love to play on the computer,” Frances said. “It keeps my mind active. It’s different for me.”
Frances’ winning attitude, determination and strong will are just a few of the reasons she successfully overcame her obstacles. And after 22 years as a BAC client, Frances is still thriving. BAC is proud that Frances made us a part of her journey all those years ago and we will continue to be there for her every step of the way.
