Cooking is an art that not everyone embraces. But that’s not the case with Megin R who has a huge taste for cooking.

A client in Brevard Achievement Center’s Adult Day Training (ADT) program, Megin has been wanting to learn how to prepare one of her favorite meals, salmon and asparagus, for a very long time.

At least twice and week, Megin and ADT Teacher, Lyn Cline, review helpful picture cards and discuss the steps necessary to cook the meal. “Megin is really close to mastering the process,” Cline said. “Once she does that, the two of us are going to shop for all the ingredients.”

Cline said that once they have the ingredients, they will cook the meal together in the ADT’s classroom kitchen. Megin then intends to take the fruits of her labor home to share with her family. She will likely take her taste for cooking on to another favorite recipe.

For people with disabilities like Megin, these milestones are an important part of their growth to be more independent. Programs such as these at Brevard Achievement Center give people with disabilities of all kinds a chance to thrive and to overcome their limits to achieve.
