Florida ARF & FADSP Celebrate Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Recognition Week
DSP’s Making a Difference: Brett Logan

As part of DSP Recognition Week, FADSP is pleased to recognize Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who are making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they serve. Brett Logan is one of those DSPs.
Brett Logan has been working at Brevard Achievement Center (BAC) for eighteen years, currently as a Technology Instructor. She exemplifies what it means to be a true advocate, educator, and supporter of individuals with disabilities. With over 18 years of dedicated service in various roles, Brett continues to bring her full heart and unwavering passion to the work she does each day. What sets Brett apart is her deep commitment to the long-term success and growth of the individuals she supports. She not only shows up but also builds, innovates, and inspires.
Most recently, Brett developed and launched a horticulture-based initiative called the Green Thumb Society (GTS), a program specifically tailored to the interests and abilities of the individuals served. What began as a simple gardening activity has blossomed into a robust, peer-led teaching model where participants are now confidently sharing their knowledge with others. Through GTS, participants have learned and practiced valuable skills such as using gardening as a tool to support mental and emotional wellness, building responsibility and initiative, and applying transferrable life lessons such as learning that success is not guaranteed 100% of the time, that it’s okay when things don’t work out, and that one can assess what caused something to go wrong and try again in a different way. The individuals have also improved teamwork and socialization skills, gained self-esteem and pride in their work, been exposed to a variety of community gardens, learned about the profession of Master Gardener, and developed a greater appreciation for the importance of plants and the environment. Brett’s leadership in GTS has provided far more than technical knowledge; it has opened doors to self-expression, community pride, and lasting confidence. Her ongoing presence and guidance in this program continue to cultivate a space where individuals can thrive, lead, and support one another.
Brett’s mission is personal. She truly believes in the hidden potential of every individual and makes it her responsibility to bring that forward. She has a remarkable ability to see what others in the world might miss: a quiet strength, an untapped talent, a spark of independence. Brett creates a safe, creative, and affirming environment where individuals can discover those strengths for themselves. Her passion is unmatched, but equally commendable is her flexibility and team spirit.
Brett consistently fills in across roles and responsibilities, always stepping up to ensure program needs are met. Whether it’s covering classes, mentoring new staff, or supporting behind the scenes, she does so with a can-do attitude and a focus on continuity of care for the individuals. While she helps individuals find their voice, navigate emotional expression in appropriate ways, and gain the confidence to take on leadership roles among peers, Brett is a guiding light. She is a champion of self-confidence, self-expression, and self-determination, and the individuals she supports reflect the results of that commitment every day. Brett is more than a staff member. She is a mentor, a cultivator of growth, and a true believer in the abilities of the individuals served at BAC.
Brett exemplifies the NADSP Code of Ethics in every aspect of her work, consistently upholding its principles to provide exceptional services to those she supports. She tailors her approach to each individual’s unique interests, strengths, and goals. The Green Thumb Society (GTS) she created is a direct reflection of this – built around the abilities and passions of participants, allowing them to engage meaningfully and at their own pace. Brett uses gardening not just as a skill-building activity but as a tool for promoting emotional wellness, self-regulation, and stress relief. She can always be counted on to step up and support the program wherever needed. Brett consistently takes initiative – whether that’s mentoring staff, filling in across roles, or ensuring continuity of care – demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility and integrity in all her actions. Brett works to ensure that every person has equal access to opportunities for growth, leadership, and community involvement. Her programs are designed to empower each participant equitably.
Brett helps build strong, peer-based relationships among clients through collaborative activities in GTS. Many participants now teach and support one another, building confidence and social connection. She encourages clients to lead, make decisions, and take pride in their contributions. Brett sees and nurtures potential that others might overlook, helping individuals gain independence and confidence. She is a tireless advocate, both behind the scenes and in direct care. Brett champions the voices of those she supports, ensuring their needs are heard, their rights protected, and talents are celebrated – often creating new opportunities when existing ones fall short. Her commitment to these ethical principles is evident in her daily work and in the lasting impact she has had on her clients’ lives.
Thank you, Brett, for your ongoing service to the individuals served at Brevard Achievement Center!
Sincerely,
Courtney Swilley
